ABSTRACT: This research project is justified by the sociocultural impact it has and what it could have in the future, because the results of the study can help to better understand Nicaraguan immigrants through their participation in recreation during their free time and seek to improve their quality of life. The research was qualitative, with a phenomenological approach. The participants were 13 Nicaraguans: six women and seven men, aged between 18 and 50 years, with a schooling that ranged from not having attended school to the eleventh year of secondary school. The selection was intentional for convenience. The techniques used were: interviews, observations and focus group. Some of the conclusions related to the specific objectives of the study are the following: Nicaraguan immigrants who were part of this investigation • participated in eleven types of recreational activities in their country, during the week and on weekends. • Participated in ten types of recreational activities in Costa Rica, during the week and on weekends. • have, on average, more free time in Costa Rica than in their country. • their participation in recreational activities was affected by intrapersonal, interpersonal barriers and structural. • They identified the negative attitude toward recreation, lack of company, lack of money, lack of free time and dependence on the spouse as the main causes of the barriers that prevented them from enjoying themselves in Costa Rica. • They indicated that in order to solve the situations that prevented them from recreating in Costa Rica, they used several negotiation strategies or alternatives, such as asking the bosses for permission to go to some activity during the week, accepting an invitation if they had the opportunity to go, take advantage of the free time to participate in some recreational activity, keep doing activities but less frequently than in Nicaragua, look for organized activities to do in your free time -whether with or without company- and organize activities with other people to recreate together. • indicated that the change of country has affected their participation in recreational activities in Costa Rica. In some cases, the effect of the change had been positive and in others, negative.
