ABSTRACT: The general objective of the project is to study the nature and impact of academic networks that are developed at the University of Costa Rica. Its methodological process was based on the development of an exploratory study which began with the search of theoretical elements that support the concept of academic network (nature and dynamics) and its strengthening. In addition, some interviews with coordinators of institutional academic networks were included in order to know the contributions, achievements, and lessons learned in each case. Also, categories of analysis were identified with the information collected. Finally, workshops were developed with teachers from four regional offices and one with the Council of Deans of the Rodrigo Facio main campus. As a direct-interest population (obtaining information), people using the academic networks were sought out, the population of indirect interest (information sharing) consisted of the heads of the different university campuses. By that time there was a first digital version (DV) of a catalogue with information of various academic networks that could serve as support for the substantive university activities. This catalogue was revised during workshops and enriched with the results of the workshops to later develop a Web version. One of the main achievements of this research was the elaboration of support material for the development of teaching, research and social action at the University of Costa Rica, which consists of a catalogue of free access found online were information on links and networks at the local, national and international levels for different areas is located, as well as a space for contributions of users who constantly enrich the information shown. The expectation is that people will be able to obtain information about diverse academic networks, recognized in higher education in order to be linked to then, in addition to provide information that can strengthen the university system. Finally, as mentioned in the resolution of IESAL/UNESCO, it is important to promote academic networks given the benefits it has for higher education, so it is recommended to create more awareness on this topic through outreach and informative activities.
