ABSTRACT: The purpose of the research was to carry out a critical analysis of the reality of the University of Costa Rica, articulating the historical and social processes of the country, allowing interpreting the prospective symbolic constructions that academics , students and staff with decision-making power , elaborate in the institution. The intention of this research was to achieve an interpretation as close as possible in terms of clarity and precision of the research problem, which in this case, was to know the symbolic constructions that people elaborate about the future of the University of Costa Rica, this made it highly complex, since the only way to apprehend such constructions is through the collection of qualitative information. As final considerations the author raises the following: • People who contributed by sharing their ideas do not have a clear model of the university they want, but they have clarity about the university they do not want. This allowed reading between the lines and from there build the "tips" necessary for a reform that ensures a relevant institution. • The methodology considered initially would allow the interlocutor to speak freely about the aspects to be investigated, despite this some did it in a timid way, nevertheless they were located in what was meaningful to them and made sense. The methodology did not present limitations, but the Scopes did not respond to initial expectations, so some topics were superficially addressed, including regionalization, accreditation, and the relationship with the State. • Many interventions referred to changes and reforms and focused attention on the administrative, as a problem, even when something so important with interdisciplinarity, which is affecting the curriculum, in the imaginary was an administrative problem. This issue should be addressed more precisely. •The people interviewed had decision-making power and influence capacity, in despite of this they showed a certain distance from what was discussed, encapsulating themselves as they didnt want to compromise with an unpriced result or with a change requested by the situation •With the student body a greater critical participation was sought, at least with those who were in advanced levels of their career, however the opinions kept a reading of the University very positive and sometimes "romantic", in the sense of not indicating the basis of their opinions.
