Plan piloto para el mejoramiento de la enseñanza de la ciencia y la matemática.

Abstract

Este proyecto de investigación, cuyo enfoque es constructivista, se realizó con el objetivo de elaborar y poner en práctica un plan piloto para mejorar -cualitativa y cuantitativamente- la enseñanza de las Ciencias y la Matemática en las instituciones de educación pública en Costa Rica. El plan se llevó a cabo en cuatro instituciones (dos escuelas y dos colegios), que representarían al grupo experimental. Asimismo, se seleccionaron cuatro instituciones más (dos escuelas y dos colegios), que constituyeron el grupo control. Para la consecución de este plan, el equipo de investigadores propuso una serie de objetivos específicos, entre ellos, ejecutar el plan piloto para evaluarlo y hacer las adecuaciones necesarias en los programas de estudio de la Educación General Básica y del Ciclo Diversificado. Otro de los objetivos fue desarrollar, en los estudiantes, aptitudes científicas y actitudes positivas ante las Ciencias y la Matemática. Para esto, se aplicaron pruebas de aptitud con el fin de conocer la visión de los alumnos sobre cada una de las asignaturas, la escala empleada para recoger esta información fue elaborada por el Dr. Kenneth Tobin. También se confeccionaron y validaron pruebas de conocimiento con referencia a criterios, que se aplicaron ( tanto al grupo control como al experimental) al inicio del proyecto, en marzo de 1992, y al finalizar cada curso lectivo mientras tardó la investigación (en 1992, en 1993 y en 1994, respectivamente). Los resultados y el análisis de estas pruebas se presentan en 45 cuadros y sus respectivos gráficos en este informe final. Las pruebas citadas facilitaron, además, el cumplimiento de otro objetivo, determinar el nivel de los estudiantes con respecto a las variables dependientes en la investigación: dominio de procesos científicos, actitud hacia las Ciencias y su enseñanza, actitud hacia la Matemática y su enseñanza, dominio de conocimientos mínimos en Matemática y en Ciencias y desarrollo del pensamiento crítico. Para el análisis cualitativo del proyecto, los datos se recogieron por medio de la observación sistemática y controlada de las clases, así como por medio de encuestas y entrevistas a estudiantes, a maestros, a profesores, a directores y a padres de familia. Los resultados de esta investigación demostraron que después de aplicar el plan piloto al grupo experimental hubo mejoras en el rendimiento académico y en la actitud ante ambas asignaturas por parte de los estudiantes, el ambiente de aprendizaje se tornó más participativo y se propició la construcción del conocimiento (no su imposición). También se dio un cambio positivo en la actitud de los docentes que participaron en el proyecto.

ABSTRACT: This research Project focuses with a constructivist approach is carried out with the object of developing and to put into practice a pilot plan to improve - qualitatively and quantitatively - the teaching of Science and Mathematics in public education institutions in Costa Rica. The plan was carried out in four institutions (representing the experimental group). Likewise, four more institutions were selected (two schools and two highe schools), which constituted the control of the group. To achieve this plan, the team of researchers proposed a series of specific objectives, including the execution of pilot plan to evaluate it and make the necessary adjustments to it to study programs of Basic General Education and the Diversified Cycle. Another of the objectives was developed, such as the students, scientific aptitudes and positive attitudes towards Sciences and Mathematics. For this, aptitude tests will be applied in order to know the vision of the students on each of the subjects, the scale used to collect this information was developed by Dr. Kenneth Tobin. Knowledge tests were also prepared and validated in reference to criteria, which were applied (both to the control and experimental groups) at the beginning of the project, in March 1992, and at the end of each academic year while the research took (in 1992, in 1993 and in 1994, respectively). The results and analysis of these tests are presented in 45 tables and their graphs in this final report. The aforementioned tests also facilitate the fulfillment of another objective, to determine the level of the students respecting to the dependent variables in the research: mastery of scientific processes, attitude towards science and its teaching, attitude towards mathematics and its teaching, Mastery of minimal knowledge in Mathematics and Science and development of critical thinking. For the qualitative analysis of the project, the data is recognized through systematic and controlled observation of the classes, as well as through surveys and interviews with students, teachers, principals and parents. The results of this research showed that after applying the pilot plan to the experimental group, there were improvements in academic performance and in the attitude towards both subjects by the students. The learning environment became more participatory and the construction of knowledge was promoted. (not its imposition). There was also a positive change in the attitude of the teachers who participated in the project.
