ABSTRACT: This document is the update of the "Methodological Guide to develop professional academic profiles at the University of Costa Rica", published in 1994. The purpose of this new document is to offer to academic units a curricular instrument that arises from the practice of those who have planned the curricular actions at the University of Costa Rica. It can also guide similar actions in other institutions of higher education, as the experience of the researchers in recent years has shown. This curricular instrument guides the academic units in the elaboration of the academic-professional profile of the career, through a participatory process that involves: teachers-administrative, professors, students, professionals in service, representatives of the main public and private professional entities, community members and service users. Action-participatory research applied to curricular adaptation or readjustment is appropriate to develop the professional academic profile, since it allows an exchange relationship between the curricular advisor and the participants of the process. A work style is generated that constitutes a reflective process of group learning. Participants develop the ability to investigate regarding the educational and curricular work, they acquire knowledge about the stages of the study plan (professional academic profile, curriculum administration training plan, and curricular evaluation), which results in the qualitative improvement of work teacher. The methodological strategy must be adapted to the characteristics of those involved in the process and to the curriculum planning approach, proposed in the conceptual framework (holistic focused on human development). The proposed guide to prepare the profile of a university career includes three phases: preparation of the base profile (PB), preparation of the professional academic profile (PAP) and, assessment of the professional academic profile (PAP) (see phases to prepare the Profile Professional Academic). It should be noted that the participatory action research process does not end with the third phase of the profile, but rather leads to the initiation of the second phase of the study plan (training plan).
