ABSTRACT: This report presents the results of a series of tests carried out on a sample of the student population of the Costa Rican Scientific Colleges (CCC) of San Pedro and Cartago, with the purpose of knowing the profile that these students present when entering these institutions and which one present when leaving them. The chosen sample corresponds to the total population that entered the aforementioned institutions in 1995 and graduated in 1996. In the first instance, a comparative analysis was made of the academic knowledge that the students mastered, at the time of their admission to the CCCs, in the areas of Sciences and Humanities, in relation to which a group of students from an official school and another group of university students dominated. Three psychogenetic tests (Lawson Test, Proportionality or Concentration Test and Probability Quantification Test) were also applied to determine the level of cognitive development of the subjects both at the time of entering the C.C.C., and at the end of their studies. The study was completed with the application of the "Scale on the concept of yourself", ", by Piers & Harris, to find out the degree of self-esteem that the subjects managed of themselves, as well as open interviews directed at students, their families and educators. And, finally, the CLES test ( Constructivist Learning Environment) to characterize the learning environment (autonomy, prior knowledge, negotiation and student centered) in these Institutions. Some of the conclusions reached by the study are: at the time of entering the CCCs, the Students showed higher academic performance in the Humanities area, but this varied after finishing high school. In general, formal thinking predominates at the level of reasoning, which shows intellectual maturity. In the socio-affective area, high levels of self-esteem are evident. For the most part, the students hope to succeed in their professional lives for which, according to the professors, the work of the CCCs and of the family are determining aspects.
